13 May 2024

Well, the sun finally shone on Peregian Golf Course for a FULL DAY.

Hopefully, with a bit more sun we can get back to carts on the Course again.

13 groups battled it out today for a 3 – 4 Person Ambrose event with 3 clubs and a putter.

It was interesting to note, that the winning scores with 3 clubs were not much different to the winning scores with a full set of clubs.

Maybe we don’t need all those extra clubs weighing down our golf bags!

22 January 2024

Well after last weeks monsoon which left our vets feeling  decidedly bedraggled we had the big heat which left some concerned whether it was primary or secondary hyperhidrosis. No matter common sense prevailed and those feeling it was too much for them pulled out – very wise.

Sadly some said that this common sense didn’t extend to the “club” who decided it was necessary to keep the carts on paths. That being said it was positive to see the vets following the rules unlike some others on the day.

We have lost the services of Kirby and Maddie on subsequent weeks. A great loss to the club and the vets, we wish them well in their new endeavours. This all came as a bit of a surprise to the committee and we will see what can be done to officially thank them for their service over the past few years.

Where do I start, this is exceedingly long and hard,   to put into words but here goes.

Next week it is the REDSKINS tourny, this is a special event and we have some special considerations.

Registration – we need groups of 4 players. I will take a snapshot of the enrollment on Friday at 5pm. After that time we will only add groups of 4 persons. Until we have a four you are in a waitlist. Each team will have a name (so start thinking of one), on the Monday morning,  before i give you a card i will ask for a team name which you must provide. As there is complimentary food and drinks at REDSKINS, we have a minimum 14 games played for enrollment. If you haven’t attained this number , still want to play and have your name down that’s fine but be aware we will charge you between $20 (13-7 games) and $30  (6 or less) plus the $10 comp fee.

Rules of the Game – this is a skins game across the field off the red tees with a white tees handicap. Add the three best individual stableford scores on the hole and enter them on the card. The fourth best score is also entered on the card but is only used as a tie break*. The sum of the three best scores is your teams score on that hole. We compare this score against everyone else’s score. If it is the highest score your team wins 4 bottles of delightful red wine. If two or more teams have the same score no one wins and the 4 bottles roll forward to the next hole. This process is repeated for a maximum of 3 holes. On the 3rd hole if there isn’t a winner we use the 4th persons score* on the last hole to decide the winner of the 12 bottles of wine. If the 4th persons score isn’t enough to determine a winner the bottles of wine are split between the winning teams.

Practicalities – Skins games need a lot of work with the scorecards. So write CLEARLY,  to further help the scorer, I would be grateful if (assuming you have the technology) take a photo of your card after 9 holes and send it to this number (0404 878 778). Dave will then input these scores during the round to save time when everyone comes in. Presentation will be an audio / visual feast hosted by Dave Reid on keyboards and Glenn Martin on pointer. Enjoy the experience and be patient this process takes time. Good job the bar will remain open.

AT NO STAGE DRINK ANY OF THE RED WINE AT THE CLUB. TAKE IT HOME!.

Along with the wine we will also be handing out Lyons Xmas Cakes and Puddings. Please take one (cake or pudding) when you leave and Flemo don’t eat it on the way home!.

Hopes that covers it all, if i have forgotten anything its too late now we will make changes on the fly without communication or consultation – sound familiar?

Cheers

Mike

13 November 2023

A bright sunny day greeted the 76 contestants today. In the last Host day for 2023 Tin Can Bay brought down 18 worthy types to enjoy our hospitality. As well as the customary tea/coffee and biscuits we had pies and sausage rolls to devour courtesy of Bob Sievers. We welcomed new kid on the block Graham Poyser and welcomed back Dave Reading complete with new hip. Good luck to Bob Gore who goes in for a new knee tomorrow (Tuesday).

Next Monday we have the AGM and to speed things along we will have a Team Game.  I would encourage everyone to attend as we may have a vote for committee positions and a few free drinks is the norm.

Also to ensure we have a stress free Xmas Party can you bring your $20 (if you have a partner attending) next Monday. Terry V will be collecting. After that you will need to track down Terry or myself prior to the 28th November and pay us directly.

Cheers

Next week its a Tin Can Bay host day,  shove your name down early. Following week the AGM. A little bird tells me a few committee types are dropping out and a few have put their names forward so it could be a contentious and cataclysmic meeting. Expect bombshells, big reveals and maybe a ballot, so me ready!

In other news, thanks to everyone bringing the right change. Dale was almost giddy with excitement as he collected lots of $5’s and $10’s.

Enjoy the week

Captain’s Comments

Ian Fedrick had an eagle on the Par 5 11th hole, for which he will receive a box of balls, well possibly or the cash equivalent depending on what we can organize with the pro shop.

Next week it’s a standard stableford game and the week after we host Tin Can Bay for the last host day of the year.

The Xmas Party / Awards Night sign up is now closed and over the next few days we will advise everyone of their status. Quick look we should have over 100 attending.

Palmer Coolum (Pelican away game) has 39 takers and i have requested a few more slots. Hopefully Pelican can oblige. If they do i will increase the capacity on the website, stay tuned.

Have a good week

Cheers

Mike

Gents before we look forward can I request that people owing money for their cart rides please make Terry’s life easier by paying him the next time they play, or if this is going to be many weeks in the future just request bank details and make the payment that way. Don’t want to appear difficult just make everyone’s life easier.

Looking forward and it’s no game for us next Monday due to the renos and owner change but we do have a game at Nambour on 23rd and an alternative home game on sandy bumpy greens at Peregian. Sign up for either on their respective websites.

Also the xmas party/ awards night enrollment is open now until the 30th October.

Enjoy the last days of GSM

Cheers

The away team enjoyed complimentary biscuits, vego sandwiches, cake, tea coffee. A veritable feast. Best round of the day was David Benjamin with 42 points followed by yours truly 36 and Jeff Cornell 35. A few nearest the pins and raffle prizes for Terry V, Dale and others (I forget).

Course left a bit to be desired they seem to have been hit by a lack of rain (not a problem for us) and they had just done mild renos. Still a good day.

Looking forward, Tin Can Bay only has 15 on the bus, 19 in total. If you want to go, email me today. Remember no game this Monday !.

Even further into the distance, we have the last GSM game on the 9th October before our own renos on the 16th.

First a big thanks to Gary for standing in during my absence.

Next week we have around 30 going to Cooroy, hoorah!  and Tin Can Bay participation is on the rise. If you want to go please sign up asap.

We will have a home game as well next Monday so put your name down through the clubs website.

Please note there will be no game on Monday 2nd October as we will all be out celebrating the Kings Birthday. So TCB on Tuesday is an option, just saying.

The 9th October will be the last GSM Vets Monday with the 16th being Day One of the course renos.

Lets all hope the new owners advise us of their intentions this week so we can all have a good old chin wag about it all.

Mt Coolum sadly retained the Emu Rock trophy. Our limited field meant it would be an uphill challenge but one worthy of taking on. Peregian scored 581pts and Mt Coolum scored 698 pts. Overall the totals were Peregian 1,295 pts to Mt Coolum 1,366. However, individually Jeff Cornell won the straightest drive, Bill Wellington won an NTP #5 and notable scores from Bob Sievers, Peter Pederson and Chops Malcolm with 32 points and a ball in the run down.

Don’t forget to put your name down for the Game at Cooroy 25th. Registartion closes on the 18th.

Big shout out to Dave Bennett for donating his laser rangefinder which raised over $300 for the vets coffers. Also to Kirby, Maddy, Tara and Lisa for going the extra mile on service.

Captain’s Comments

There seemed a little confusion on my part as we had agreed our championship would now mirror the District and have stroke play for the A division and stableford for the B division, rather than previous years gross and net for B division. Anyway here are the results so far

A grade gross is lead by Steve Weir 72, Rob Mowat 74 and Dale Whitney 76.

A grade net is lead by Steve and Rob with 69 then Dale, Terry Vestris and Nick Ahrens on 71.

B grade stableford is lead by Bob Walters with 38, Greg Pearson 37 , Rob Greig and Peter Priston 36.

However, we have 18 holes to play and it’s not over till the large lady sings……..

Talking of which we all have an opportunity to expand our waistline with complementary snacks and drinks this coming Monday. Please arrange uber’s and early bed time if you think this will be necessary.

Captain’s Comments

I must congratulate our Patron, John Crossley on his 40 points yesterday as he edges toward shooting his age. Also, a big thanks to our FIFO kiwi Ray Boland for his generous $20 prize for the low round of the day. Soren thought he had missed out after double figures on the front but his back 9 score sealed the deal.

Looking forward there is much on the horizon, so much in fact I will bulletize it

  • The Vets Championship starts next week. Go to the events section, read all about it and then sign up as instructed. This is your chance for immortality. Sign up is permitted on the day but it causes a lot of hassle so please sign up now!
  • The Awards Night is set for Saturday evening on December 2nd. Complimentary* two course meal and drinks (* nominal $20 charge for your partner). Enrolment will open when we confirm details of the meal etc. in the coming months. Capacity is limited, if enrolment exceeds the capacity precedence is given based on the number of games played. The committee will also provide a very limited number of wild cards based on legacy considerations, sob stories and other such extenuating circumstances. Needless to say, if necessary we will have a waitlist so as people pull out we backfill with deserving cases.
  • We have the $50 NTP challenge next week (7th that’s 2 x $25).
  • Complimentary snacks and drink on the 14th. As we toast the anointed champions for 2023. The gross winners are exempt for the 2024 District Championship.

There’s probably more but can’t think of it for now

Cheers

Mike

Captain’s Comments

Looking forward we host Cooroy next Monday then the following two weeks it will be the Vets Championship. I will advise all the details next week but you have a choice, play in the Championships and pay an EXTRA $10 in total (for both legs), don’t play in the champs and pay the usual $10. Prizes are the same week by week but of course you have the chance for immortality should you win AND if that wasn’t enough any number of worldly gifts come the AWARDS Night Party on December 2nd, yes we are having a sit down (with permissible standing up and moving around ) party this year with proper food etc. Keep this Saturday open and to be sure one either side of it. More to follow as we ramp up to the event of the year…..

Cheers

Captain’s Comments

BBC Round 1, we hold a lead but a few shy of what was announced. As in life the beer goggles tend to enhance the beauty you behold, in this case our lead went from 63 points to 48. (546 vs 498).

Looking into my crystal ball it’s the match play next week and the forecast is 70% rain. Perfect for match play! In addition, the crystal says we will have a team event at the same time, that will give me something to ponder over the course of the week. However, it is without doubt time for a free meat roll, chips and a hearty ale all complimentary courtesy of the raffle. Come rain, shine, plague or whatever turn up at 12:45 and we will enjoy this beano.

Week after its Cooroy at home and then the big two week extravaganza the vets championships. This is the one to win and yes, we will have another “lunch” with refreshments. Remember always gamble responsibly and enjoy the fruits of your losses as you have another complementary beverage.

Will this ever end? well yes.  The committee is burning/burnt thorough the post covid surplus faster than a politician coming up for reelection, but don’t worry, Dale’s steady hand is on the tiller, what could go wrong?

Enjoy the week

Mike

Captain’s Comments

Captains Comments Yippeee!

As I have been away for a while and neglected to add in any comments in recent weeks I have decided to return with a bang and it’s a big one………

The Vets MatchPlay competition. (Our 4th major at last! this means free drinks and food for all yippee!!!)

This will start with a field of 16 players. To qualify you must be one of the top 16 (on stableford points across all flights on Monday 15th May). Count Back if necessary.

Once qualified and you accept to play it’s a $10 additional cost.

Any invitees that don’t want to play will be replaced by the person who was 17th,18th, etc from the qualifying round.

Dates of play will be

Qualifier              – 15th May

Round 16             – 5th June

Quarters              – 12th June

Semis                    – 26th June

Finals                     – 3rd July

If a player wins but can’t play the next round, he is replaced by the person he beat in the prior round.    If both parties agree to an alternative date, they can play outside of the designated dates but this has to be agreed in advance with the captain and it must be within the same week as the round.

The intent is the matchplay will be conducted during a normal Monday’s single stableford. This means some of the matchplay rules will be amended. For example, you must put out even if the hole is conceded to ensure you have a chance in the single stableford comp. Ready golf will be allowed (to speed play) but after the Tee shot. Even if you have both “wiped the hole” you still need to see who wins it, so keep playing until one player concedes.

Other rules etc will be made up on the day as necessary by the Captain.

Finally, if you get a chance to go to a LIV event, do it.

Super day, I hope you enjoyed the food and drinks as well as the golf.  Big thanks to our Patron.

Next week there is no vets on Monday. The alternative is go to Gympie and play there on a Tuesday. Well 25 people have taken that opportunity up.

Looking further ahead, we host Mt Coolum on the 17th and round one of the Emu Rock trophy. The following week we have a two game opportunity. The 24th (Mon) at home and the 26th (Wed) at Noosa Tewantin.  For the latter please sign up through the events page on this site.

In the meantime enjoy the Masters, check out their muddy bunkers and see if they have weeds around and in the greens!!!

Cheers

Mike

Captains Comments

Lots to get through so no preamble this week, straight down to business, no bull***t here.

  1. Next week 6th it’s a Texas Shamble – Two man team, both tee off, you select the preferred drive and play your own ball in. Handicap remains the same so Par 3’s are of particular importance. Drives will be restricted.
  2. 13th and 20th will be normal Single Stableford BUT we also have our first District Event on the 20th which will be held at Maroochy River. If you wish to partake please visit the calendar of events and register your interest. In the event of over-subscription I will apply filters to select the best team. A major filter will be games played.
  3. As the Host day for Caloundra has moved to the 27th, we will have the Patrons Plate on the 3rd April. Details to follow.
  4. Can I request you and your scorer sign scorecards and enter the total in the top right of the card. This saves time and potential mistakes. Can’t be bothered? No Problem DQ.

Well I hope everyone had a good time as this will have to suffice for two weeks. The 13th February is the start of the renos. so no golf M, T, W, then it should be a nice sandy beach to play on. Hopefully it will rain and wash some of that sand into the bunkers.

Following Monday it’s our first away game, at Headland, please sign up BEFORE the 13th (numbers are capped at 40 so about 12 spaces left) and I have to send off the players list on that date. I will post the nominees on the “Draw” page so you can check all is well on the 12th.  After that you will have to go on the waitlist and keep fingers crossed.

We  will have a home game for the unlucky ones who would prefer to play on sand greens at Peregian. Sign up on the club site same as usual.

Cheers

Next week we (try to) Host Gympie. Should be a good turn out based on a few weeks ago so sign up early to avoid disappointment. Following on from that the first game in February we will have the first $25 prize for the nearest the pin on Hole 8. Could be anywhere from 50 – 100m depending on which phase the moon is in and what earth works are happening at the time. Hopefully we will have Brittany Hall make the presentation.

13th February won’t be a vets game as the earth works will spread to the course itself. Let’s hope the weather is favourable.

Captains Comments

Well, that’s 2022 done and dusted, lets hope we can all enjoy 2023 in rude health and good cheer. We start back on the 9th January, so sign up as soon as you are able. Remember, it’s the expensive day with $20 for the annual vet’s subscription then $10 for the game and $5 or $10 for the raffle.

Our first host game is with Gympie on the 16th and we will try and produce a large 1st innings lead in the challenge cup. I forget the details but worry not, before the day the captain will do his due diligence and look up what happened last year.

To the relief of everyone I can report McIvor and Jenner found their way home after a tumultuous time navigating the course. They were seen searching the first fairway for tee number 14/5 , must be between 1 and 2, after 10 mins they realised neither was Harry Potter and went to the 18th  to join their chums.

Oh the bit in the Breaking News about the president treasurer and historian resigning, just made that up for effect, you can rest easy.

Happy Christmas

Mike

Captains Comments

It’s been a bad week, first Harry K tries to put a ball into orbit, then the Capt/Pres cup result. For the record the team score was 406 (presidents 11), 402 (captains 11). Sadly, when the respective 12th man’s score was added (i.e. Presidents score and Captains score) it resulted in a clear cut victory for All The Presidents Men (444 vs 428). (Winning average of 37 per man).

I will spend the next 12 months working out a new format.

However, it could be worse – these 2 clubs have been left behind twice in one day

Their owner a Mr Matthew Fleming declined an interview to explain why!

Talking of thinking, the last game of the year will be next Monday (19th), then a break until the 9th January 2023. The game on the 19th will be an Ambrose with 3 clubs and a putter off the white and red tees. 1-9 are Red, 10-18 White. Get it wrong and it’s a one-shot penalty! Max 9 drives any person. After the game I suggest a couple of drinks then a lie down in a darkened room.

Finally, if you haven’t paid your 2022 cart fees next week is your last chance to pay Terry V. After which we will get out the limp lettuce leaf to administer a suitable punishment as determined by…………. “The Judge”

Cheers

Mike

The course was oozing with Veteran Golfers desperate to defend the mighty Peregian from the invading hordes of the South (Pelican Waters), who wanted to seize what is rightly ours, the Big Bird Trophy.

I will leave the exciting news about the Big Bird to our Lord Commander Jon Snow (AKA Mike Lagowski), so here are the results of the day’s Stableford Competition.

A Grade HCP 0 – 14:

Captains Comments

The final score for the Big Bird Trophy Peregian 1112 (552 + 560), Pelican 1016 (486 + 530). So despite a strong fightback by Pelican they were ultimately crushed by the bigger bird. We take an 8 to 6 lead into the new year and by all accounts it will be another two home games for Peregian assuming of course Pelican still have a club and we haven’t been bought out by some chaps with deep pockets and a grand vision.

In the short term, it’s a Host Day again next week this time with Cooroy and the week after (10th) it’s the annual Captain vs President challenge. To make the day special while we hand out the trophies for 2022, we will have complimentary drinks and maybe some nibbles off the menu.

Founders Cup, and the winner is……………to be revealed on the 10th December.

Cheers

In hot, humid conditions 72 Vets donned their red finery for our Annual Redskins Day.

Some teams will have a generous supply of quality red wine for Xmas while most teams will need to go to Dan Murphy to their red plonk fix for the festive season.

Our Patron, John Crossley, celebrated his 90th birthday in style, giving a stirring rendition of our “unofficial” national anthem “Waltzing Matilda”.

Your Secretary was too busy tasting the reds on offer at the Bar and  the results sheet to confirm a theory, so from memory the NTP Winners were:

3rd: Bob Heiler

5th: Frank Gava

8th: Col Anderson

12th: Ray Nichols

14th: Ben Constable (a mighty hole in one)

15th (2nd shot): Chris Birch

And the wine went to the following:

Bob that’s remarkable, so red wine works as a memory enhancer, wow you live and learn.

For the record “Here comes the Judge” were the judge, Ian Clements, Graeme Watts, Frank Gava, “Mistletoe’s”  were Chops, Greg Pearson, Peter Browne, Terry Vestris.

So next week it’s the second round of the big bird challenge, we have a lead but no room for complacency as losing the trophy when we have home ground advantage would result in a humongous amount of humble pie. So, we need 15 chaps to really go deep!

Golf Rule Changes for 2023

Club Damaged During Round:

  • The Rule has been amended to allow a player to replace a club that is damaged during a round, provided the player did not damage it through abuse.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 7 NOVEMBER 2022

Meeting Opened

The meeting was chaired by Mal Ryan, President and was opened at 1.30pm.

  1. Attendances and Apologies

The members present represented those players shown on the starting sheet. Apologies were received from Stuart Sutherland, Ron Jadach and Terry Hehir.

  1. Confirmation of Minutes

The minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 14 November 2022 were confirmed. Proposed by Jeff Cornell and seconded by Duncan Smith.

  1. President’s Report

What a year. Horrible weather, Covid again along with horrible weather, more Covid, and yes more horrible weather, and an end to Covid, but the weather has not really changed. As a result, we have missed so many games, have had significantly lower field numbers and as a result, lower cash flow and profit to pay for our usual Vets activities. Maybe the gloom is coming to an end as we head towards summer, we all deserve something better.

Unfortunately, we have recently lost three of our senior Vets, Bernie Ross, Deane Hill and Geunter Buczynski have passed and many of us who played with them over the years will remember them fondly, they both had their golfing traits that many of us talk about. On behalf of the Vets we have sent condolence cards to their respective families.

As we move towards year end, we hope things will improve. The loss of Craig Must and his catering is a severe blow with our plans for Redskins and the annual Christmas get together somewhat stalled. Yes, we are determined to have both, but without catering as we have enjoyed, everything will be much lower key. I suppose on the positive side, our finances will be restricted, and a nice surplus will be passed over into 2023 despite our lower cash flow throughout the year.

Personally, as President for the first time, I can only thank you for the contribution you have all made this year. There have been no complaints, we have toiled throughout, attended away games in big numbers, and met our commitments to all District events. Mike and the team did a super job again with the District Championships for the second year, the compliments from all clubs are testament to its success. I thank all those who took the time to assist, from managing this event, the spotters on the day and the Vets support overall.

Probably the best thing I can get out of a year like this, is the feedback from our Vets and those many visitors we have had on Host days. We are the envy of these clubs. We have a draw done so we play with different groups each week, we have a shotgun start so we all finish together, we stay at the club and have great camaraderie, as well as being financially healthy to cover our various special events throughout the year. No other club has anywhere near these positives, and it is you guys that make it all possible.

My final thanks go to Mike, a great Captain for the past 2 years, the time spent is enormous. Same to Dale, we are always cash positive as has been the case over the past 20 years he has been Treasurer (according to him)! To Bob Walters, thanks for taking over the secretary’s role, we all know that is the most work after the Captain’s job. And to the rest of the committee, thanks so much. Garry you are a legend, your back-up for Mike, helping to do the draw every Sunday morning has not changed for many years, may the racing gods be with you much longer. Marto who knows who gets away without entertaining a raffle investment each week he will continue to stalk you … but to the benefit of us all. And to Terry who volunteers for everything especially barrel girl for the raffles, Bob Sievers for his ability to raise so much sponsorship money, Ron for excellent management of our District Championships and Ian our understudy Treasurer in Dale’s absence, your efforts are not un-noticed. You guys bring a different perspective to our committee and the way we go forward. That is the foundation of a good management group, and I thank you all for that. Finally, to Peter Browne and Ian Davis for taking District responsibility throughout the past year and now into 2023. It’s been difficult, different, but the job has been done very successfully.

May we all stay healthy, the Gods renew our faith in the Sunny Coast weather, and all enjoy our lead up to Christmas.

Thanks for making 2022 a year to remember, for the many positives amongst the gloom.

Mal Ryan

  1. Captain’s Report

First off, my thanks to the committee and volunteers who have helped me during the year, you know who you are so no long lists, but I appreciate your helping, standing in when necessary, correcting and doing stuff on many occasions. Thank you.

A relatively stress free 2022 with just over 100 members and around 60 playing on most days. Our average age (73) and handicap (24) have remained very similar YOY.

Cart owners account for ~50% of the membership so in general we are OK to give our non-cart owners a lift on Monday. During 2022 the current Levy of $2 a home game has been sufficient to fund the occasional cart hire (at $15 per person).  If there is a surplus from this fund at the end of the year it will be prorated between the cart owners. For 2023 in anticipation of increased cart charges the levy will be $3 / game, but we reserve the right to increase this if necessary.

Please note the cost of running a cart is significant so the informal purchase of a drink of choice for the cart owner by their passenger before any “shout” occurs on the day is appreciated.

We have lost 13 games due to rain, 10 in the first 6 months. So things are improving!

We maintained the approximate once a month Team Game which will continue during 2023. Visited and hosted all the district clubs save Nambour due to the weather and took part in all of the District Team Games as well as hosting the District Club Championships.

The 2023 calendar is already available on the website for those planning vacations etc. However, things do change during the year so no guarantees!

The surplus from the hosting of the District Championships (~$1200) was donated to the Vets. The committee decided a small portion of that could be used to fund a website.

Bob Walters did the design and build as well as necessary purchases of domain names etc. In addition, he did most of the population of the website with content supplied by several people, as an example, Marto’s club history.

Going forward the events section and breaking news will be maintained by the captain. I encourage you to bookmark and visit the site regularly.

There have been issues with the Bigpond emails in 2022, (which I think are related to spam/junk filters both personal and corporate) so in 2023 the website will become the single place to go for current and old news.  We have set up a login to ensure only paid-up vets members have access to the website for enrolment to away games (a district requirement) and reduce chances of hacking etc. If you don’t have the hardware or knowledge to access the web then contact Bob Walters to arrange some training or as a last resort the Captain too arrange an alternative communication method.

Let’s hope for a healthy and fun end to 2022 and onwards into 2023.

Captains Comments

It’s the run down to the end of the year and next week is the final “major” of the year, The Redskins. In this event we have teams of 4 players who each play single stableford off the red tees. The scores are recorded hole by hole, simples. The clever bit comes when we analyze the scores for everyone, it goes like this:

The top three scores for the team are summed and recorded for each hole. This score is compared to the other teams and if one is greater than the rest they win the hole and receive 4 bottles of red wine!. If two or more teams score the same then the hole is deemed tied for all and you carry forward the 4 bottles to the next hole. If this is similarly tied by any two teams, we repeat the process. The next hole is scored in the same way and if one team has the highest score, they win 4+4+4 or (12) bottles of wine.  However, if two or more teams tie this third hole we invoke the tie break, this compares the 4th players score for the teams that have tied. If there is a difference then the highest score wins or if there is a tie with the 4th players score the bottles are shared out between the teams that have tied with the 4th players’ score.

Seems simple enough but I hear someone asking about the 18th hole and what if blah blah blah. Well, I’m not going to tell you, turn up and Marto will explain it all.

As the scoring takes some time, we will provide free drinks and either a beef roll or schnitzel burger with a shared bowl of chips. If you have dietary restrictions, please email me and we’ll provide an alternative on the day. To the eventual winners please don’t drink any of the prizes at the club, this will result in confiscation and subsequent consumption of the offending bottles of wine by the committee.

Finally, we will hand out complimentary Lyons Xmas Cakes or Puddings sometime during the proceedings so all in all not an event to miss.

Now the restrictions – we have to have teams of 4 so sign up early. This beano costs money which we get from raffle tickets and comp fees during the year so to prequalify you need 14 games this year (1/3 of eligible home games). Failing that there will be a charge to play in addition to the usual $10.  Sign up and if you don’t pre-qualify, I will be in touch so get your excuses in order…….

Cheers

Mike

Captains Comments

First off, an advert, Tenterfield Veteran Golfers’ Open Day is being held on the 4th November. Same day as the big bash so not sure if anyone is bothered but if you’re going down there and want a bash ask for more details.

Next, the AGM day will be a “par event”, OMG, yes that game you really love that rewards a net birdie with a “+” , a net par with a “square” or 0 and a net bogey or worse with a “-“. This means it makes no sense continuing smashing away if you have already exceeded a net par. If you shoot your handicap you get 0 points rather than 36. If you get 2+, that’s ~same as 38 and 2-, 34. Easy. Lots of people hate this game but it has one redeeming characteristic, it should be faster so we can get back and get on with the prizegiving and AGM. It can and will be handicapped.

Cheers

MINUTES OF THE 2021 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 15th NOVEMBER 2021

Meeting Opened

The meeting was chaired by Andy Merlino, President and was opened at 14:20

  1. Attendances and Apologies

The members present represented those players shown on the starting sheet. An apology for absence was received from Mal Ryan.

  1. Confirmation of Minutes

The minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on the 16th November 2020 were confirmed. Proposed by Bob Walters and seconded by Ross Bachop.

  1. Business Arising from those Minutes

Andy confirmed to the members that all outstanding issues recorded in last year’s minutes had been attended to by the committee during 2020.

  1. President’s Report

Andy welcomed all members to this year’s AGM 2021 and thanked them for having him as President for the past year.

Andy referred to the similarities this year compared with the past year with a little uncertainty regarding restrictions or requirements applying to us. We missed 5 weeks during the year due to lockdown (2) and weather (3).

Our membership has remained steady with some moving on and we welcomed 8 new members. Currently our membership totals 108.

We managed to have most of our host and away games as per the calendar.

Andy thanked all members of the committee for giving their time, acknowledging each committee member and their role:

Marto for his salesmanship in selling the raffle tickets assisted by Bob Sievers Ian Davis and Ian Clements; Mal Ryan who kept going despite his health issues, assisting when required and maintaining the cart fund; Bruce Malcolm, negotiator with GSM arranging functions, meals, etc., and arranging trophies for presentation events, Redskins etc.; Garry Elliott for supporting the Captain managing the draw and results with help from Bob and Marto; Ian Clements, Secretary taking the minutes, maintaining records and the weekly newsletter; Dale Whitney, Treasurer overseeing the game and raffle takings, prizes and banking and Mike Lagowski, Captain who has done an awesome job organising, liaising with other clubs and keeping us all informed.

Andy also recognises our Patron, John Crossley, not only for his generous sponsorship of the Patrons Plate competition but also his renditions of some old favourite songs.

Andy made special mention of Ron Jadach for acting as Tournament Director for the District Championship when he received praise from all participating clubs. Andy also thanked the volunteers for their contributions. Peregian Vets have the added responsibility for the running of all District events over the next 2 years involving communicating with all clubs, chairing the quarterly meetings and representing the District at State level.  Members involved are Peter Browne, President, Ian Davis, Captain and Mal Ryan Secretary.

Andy recalled the sad passing of one of our original members, Chris Masters.

Andy thanked the staff of GSM for their support throughout the year and on a personal note advised that he and Eva will be relocating back to family in Sydney next month.

  1. Captain’s Report

Mike reported a successful year with a robust membership and little travel due to COVID resulting in constant fields in the 60s to 70s.

We have 108 members, 53 with carts. Until September we had 27 home games averaging 68 players totalling 1884 rounds of golf. We should total 36 games by the end of the year.

Our average age is 73, the youngest, 55 and oldest 92. The average handicap is 24 ranging from 3.8 to 47.6.

We entered all District events, the highlight, winning the A Grade Matchplay at Gympie.

Mike thanked Ron Jadach, Tournament Director for his hosting of the District Championship plus Andy Merlino, Bruce Malcolm and Bob Sievers on the organising committee and the volunteers Messrs Davis, Sievers, Gore, Martin, Bowes and Cornell. He also mentioned the GSM staff for their efforts on and off the course.

For the future, Mike hoped that we continue to do what we are doing, looking for any good ideas and above all, let’s have some fun and enjoy our time in the sun.

  1. Treasurer’s Report

Dale presented his Financial Statement to the meeting. He prefaced this with his (tongue-in-cheek) progress in procuring a caravan. Dale thanked the committee for their support particularly from Ian Davis who stood in during Dale’s absence. He also thanked the membership for their continued support for the raffle.

In his statement, Dale reported that gross revenue was $44,417.00 and that total expenditure was $34,476.35. for the period January 2021 to 31 October 2021. His report showed a net profit of $9,940.65 and a total balance of $21,939.67.. However, when forthcoming events are taken into account, he expects the end of year balance to be approximately $4,500.00.

A full copy of Dale’s report is attached to these minutes for the record7.

  1. Other General Business

The meeting was thrown open to the floor for any further matters. A discussion took place regarding making a donation of money to Cassie Porter as she seeks to further her career in the USA, A figure of $1,000.00 was suggested whilst others thought that double this amount would be appropriate. The motion was agreed in principle, proposed by John Crossley and seconded by Ron Jadach and it was agreed to leave the amount of money to the decision of the committee.

  1. Election of Committee for 2022

The applicants for Treasurer (Dale Whitney) and Secretary Bob Walters were elected unopposed. Mike Lagowski continues for the second of his two-year term.

There were 2 applicants for President; Ron Jadach and Mal Ryan. Ron addressed the meeting advising his suitability for the post and in Mal’s absence Ian Clements read out Mal’s offering. Following a secret ballot, Mal Ryan was elected.

There were 6 nominations for the 6 Committee Member posts and the following were elected: Garry Elliott, Ian Davis, Glenn Martin Bob Sievers Ron Jadach and  Terry Vestris.

John Crossley paid tribute to the work of the committee and congratulated President Andy Merlino for what he and his committee have done for us all.

There being no further business, the meeting was closed at 15:07.

Captains Comments

Dryer but also shorter than expected on a few holes let’s hope this rain has gone for a week or two! Next week we will have a Team Game not sure what but sign up early as last-minute requests will be hard to accommodate.

As we wind down to the end of the year consider this bombshell, to participate in the Red Skins you need to have played in 14 games in 2022. Not sure or haven’t reached that criterion – easy just play in every future game then prostrate yourself on the altar of forgiveness, or, cross the treasurers palm with silver (red plastic notes are also acceptable).

Cheers

NEWSLETTER 17 OCTOBER 2022GentlemenJust a long newsletter to keep you informed of the wonderful things happening in the land of vets. The merry greenstaff continue to beaver away doing their own thing to service our pass holder course. I’m sure we will be pleasantly surprised when all is revealed on Thursday morning. We had the District Ambrose event at Nambour on Tuesday and despite a few rain drops at the start of play the weather gods looked kindly on us and we managed the last 17 holes without a drop of rain. Results were outstanding, with a best place of 7th (winning 1 Callaway SuperSoft golf ball each)  from Peregian 2, Bill Wello, Marto, Jeff “one put” Cornell and last but not least Peter “one hand” Browne. Peregian 1 (Lagowski, Weir, Elliott and Priston) ended ever so slightly lower down the order but picked up a nearest the pin Courtesy of Mr Weir and a bonanza of another 4 Callaway supersoft balls which kindly were shared around the team. Talking of Nambour we will return there for the away game on the 24th (next Monday). Top Tip from the Captain, a practice put on the newly renovated greens will pay dividends on the day. The event nomination period is closed and these are the players I have.

Anyone seen Garry Elliott’s Rayban sunglasses. He lost them probably in the clubhouse and someone may have picked them up. He would be very happy to be reunited with them.

Several people have requested we have a farewell lunch for Craig and the proposed date is Friday 7th. To get an idea of the numbers and to forewarn Craig can we have emails from those of you that wish to attend this meal at 12:30 on the 7th. Order off the menu on the day at your own cost. Vets Website

It has been recommended by GSM that we increase the privacy and security processes on our website.

So, we are in the process of amending the site to provide a secure gateway for members to view newsletters, register for events, etc.

This will mean that Vet members will be required to initially register as a member with a user name, email address and password

We ask that you be patient with us while we make this occur.

Captains Comments

Final nominations for Cooroy have been sent off to their Captain. We will have a home game for the non travellers so sign up as normal if that is your preference.

The website is open for Tin Can Bay nominations (Tuesday 4th Oct), see above if you are trying to sign up and can’t get in. Our web guru Bob is working in the back room sweat house to try and make the experience as easy as possible for you. Please note, no vets on Monday 3rd October.

Enjoy the week

NEWSLETTER 12 SEPTEMBER 2022

Rather dull and overcast day but that seemed to inspire the glorious Peregian Team to lose to Mt Coolum by the narrowest of margins to overall win the Emu – Rock Shield for the first time. Final scores were 1366 to 1326 points. Hooray!.

Place getters were:

A flight 2nd Mike Payten – 41 points

B flight 1st Glenn Martin – 39 points, 2nd Ian Matthews – 38 points, 3rd Bob Sievers – 38 Points, (Alan Stubbs also got 38 points)

We also did pretty well in the raffle, clearly their algorithm was on the blink.

Meanwhile, back at Peregian, 21 players battled for the prizes on offer.

Here are the results.

  • 1st Place – Frank Gava 39 points ($40)
  • 2nd Place – Bruce Smart 37 points ($35)
  • 3rd Place – Dany Bowes 36 points ($25)
  • 4th Place – Ben Constable 35 points on a CB ($20)
  • 5th Place – David Findlay 35 points on a CB ($15)

7 players received a ball in the rundown.

NTP Winners each receiving 2 golf balls:

3rd: Danny Bowes

5th: David Findlay

8th: Nev Middlewick

12th: Peter Browne

14th: Danny Bowes

15th (2nd shot) NTP: Vin Penry

QUEENSLAND STATE VETERANS’ CARNIVAL

There are still some time slots available for the upcoming State Carnival.  It is hoped that a capacity field is achieved.

There are Trophies worth more than $3,500 if the Nomination reach the required number.  Men in ‘A’ Grade play stroke with the rest of the men and ladies playing Stableford.

Nominations close on Friday 23rd September.  Nomination Form and Conditions of Play information are available from the Captain.

Captains Comments

Next week it’s a Texas Scramble or as they call it in Texas a “Shamble”. For this we will have teams of 4 players and they choose the “best” drive then play their own ball for the rest of the hole then record their stableford points. (Full Handicaps are retained). Add the best 3 scores and enter this total for every hole, so 108 is even par!. Each player has to have a minimum of 3 drives, to anger the long drivers like Dale and Wello. Should we get a 3 then these teams will have a swinger.

Following week it’s Cooroy away and I have the following signed up, a couple of duplicate entries and a couple of people wanting to play with the same person or wanting to play with a person not signed up. Anyway, I have tried my best, if you have an issue or want to go better be quick as this closes on the 20th September..

Captains Comments

Well I hope everyone enjoyed the golf followed by lunch and a few drinks. Next week we look forward to a team game as a respite before the District Vets Championship.(Please note there is no Vets game on the 22nd August due to these Championships. As previously mentioned this event is a limited field, I have the following requesting a game (below). I suspect we will be able to place at least 15. Yellow guys are the ones guaranteed a seat. I had meant to say just the gross winners for the reserved place, (in this case just Rob and Graham), but I see I wasn’t explicit in my prior email, so I will include the net winners as well. Pretty sure they would have had a seat anyway.

Please tell me if you can’t make it or I have missed your request or got something else wrong.

Cheers

Captains Comments

Hole 6 was a surprise for everyone, well apart from the contractor I guess, still it provided a windfall of points with ~6 people getting 5 points. Don’t think there was a wipe but Garry decided he should be consistent with his usual score on this hole (1 point).

Even more of a surprise on the 4th hole for Peter Boyle with the sprinklers coming on right next to his cart at the start of the comp. His dutiful wife brought out a change of clothing which he had just put on when it really started to rain. Yes, timing is everything in golf.

So Round 1 is in the bag and unless the heavens open (or I’m having a bad round) we will have Round 2 next week. Please note handicaps will remain the same for the Championship (not Stableford) and we will decide any ties on a stroke play count back.  I checked the cards and there are three under review.  I’ll pull the Stableford cards and double check everything before next week and advise any material changes in the championship.

Next week it will cost EVERYONE who plays $20.  Raffle tickets are an additional $10 dollars so please raid the piggy bank. On the upside we will have complimentary fish and chips and a couple of  drinks while we work out the results. This is bound to take absolutely ages or until Dale smells a rat and pulls the plug. Oh yes if you can’t stand or have an allergic reaction to fish and chips email me (asap – before the end of the week!) and we will ask Craig to provide you a substitute.

I didn’t realize John Gregory got a hole in 1 on the 12th the prior week. Well done John!

Peter Boyle didn’t get a huge number of people volunteering for spotters this Sunday so if you are free and wish to do this drop him (not me) an email.

Cheers

Mike
